“Don’t worry…. Just Load The Wagon”

By Rex Herndon

(Philippians 4:13)

From  the inspired heart and mind of the oft tested and battle scared,  Apostle Paul, flowed words of faith and confidence,  that are perhaps, some of the most often quoted of all God’s Word.

Without hesitation, he confidently and unequivocally declared, “I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me,” (Philippians 4:13).

His purpose in making such a profoundly powerful and faith-filled statement was, to offer praise to God for His faithfulness to fulfill the promise Jesus made,  that, “He that believeth on me,  the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do,”(John 14:12).

Along with his praise, he felt compelled  to encourage his fellow believers, and ultimately, all believers, who would subsequently cross the stage of human history to face the challenges of life, and forces of darkness that bring hurt and harm with confidence, and strength. Admonishing them to, “Be strong in the Lord and in the Power of His might,”(Ephesians 6:10).

It is clear this man who many believe was the greatest apologist for Jesus Christ and the gospel in history has discovered another spiritual dimension far above the earthly dimension of fear, failure and defeat.

It is a place where, faith becomes sight;  the mountain of weakness is,”cast into the sea;” the threat of adverse wind and waves is eliminated and, the darkness of doubt is penetrated by the Light of God’s Presence and Power!

It is in that higher spiritual realm of faith that,   Jesus said, “All things are possible to him that believes,” (Mark 9:23).

It is understood, most believers today feel far short of the spiritual depth and maturity of the Apostle Paul.  However,  it must also be understood, “There is no respect of persons with God,”(Romans 2:11).

The power to, “Do all things through Christ,” for which Paul gave honor and praise to Jesus Christ, is available today, to each of us, as we exercise faith in navigating our way through the vicissitudes of life.

The Bible gives us this word of assurance, “Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them; because greater is He that is in you, than he that is in the world,”(1 John 4:4).

The indwelling Christ gives us the strength to be confident.  The familiar saying, “Go forth and conquer,” is a command we should take to heart and follow!

I was born in the Ozark Hills of Northwest Arkansas, and brought up in a home where Southern traditions were a normal part of life. I was exposed to the lifestyle of country folks, that included faith, family values, philosophy, language,  and food. It is a treasured  heritage for which I have always been grateful.

The way those old timers in the hills expressed themselves was unique and sometimes very colorful and descriptive.

In preparing this devotional about strength to face challenging tasks and the ability to overcome the perils and pitfalls of life while fulfilling the Call of God,  I remembered the words of the old country gentleman who, when picking up a heavy load with his old mule and wagon, turned away those who said the weight of the load  was too heavy for his mule to pull. He disregarded their doubt and confidently said, “Don’t worry about the mule, just load the wagon!”

In life, we have been given that unseen source of power that enables us to say, “Don’t worry…Just load the wagon!” “I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me”.
